European-only alternative to Outlook.

Outlook is a mail program, and for years it kept your mail on your own computer. The new Outlook works differently: for accounts from other providers it synchronises a copy through the Microsoft cloud. Northmail is our own free mail program for macOS and Windows, laid out like classic Outlook, that connects directly to your mail server.

Why teams are exiting Outlook

Microsoft describes it in its own support documentation: "Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers." That applies when you add an account from another provider, such as Gmail or an IMAP mailbox, to the new Outlook. So even with a European mail provider, the choice of mail program can put a copy of the mailbox with a US company. Classic Outlook does not work that way, and Microsoft says it will support it until at least 2029.

Outlook, and what replaces it in Binadit Workspace

Northmail is a mail program, not a mail service: it runs on your computer and connects to the mailbox you already have. It is made for Binadit Workspace and works without it.

Mail, calendar and contacts in one window

What we run instead
Northmail: mail, calendar and contacts in the three-pane layout of classic Outlook, with the keyboard shortcuts you know.
Engineering note
Free, for macOS and Windows, without advertisements.

Several accounts side by side

What we run instead
Binadit Workspace, on-premises Exchange and Gmail in one window, each with its own folders, calendar and contacts.
Engineering note
Type your address and Northmail finds the server.

Where your mail is kept

What we run instead
On your own computer and on your own mail server.
Engineering note
No telemetry and no account with Northmail. Passwords go into the keychain of your system.

Working offline

What we run instead
Mail, calendars and contacts are stored on your computer for the period you choose.
Engineering note
Search, read and write without a connection. It syncs when you are back.

Moving mail between accounts

What we run instead
Copy or move messages and folders between two accounts, with dates, flags and attachments intact.
Engineering note
A transfer resumes after a lost connection and reports what it did.

Copilot

What we run instead
An optional assistant that runs on your own computer with an open model you download once.
Engineering note
No mail and no prompt goes to a cloud, and nothing is sent without you seeing it first.

Outlook on a phone

What we run instead
Not replaced. Northmail is for macOS and Windows.
Engineering note
On a phone, the mail app that came with it connects to Workspace through standard protocols.

How we migrate off Outlook

Northmail installs next to Outlook. Nothing changes on the mail server, so you can try it and go back.

  1. Before the move

    Download Northmail

Northmail is free and signed for macOS and Windows. Install it next to the mail program you use now.

  2. Side by side

    Add your account

Type your address and Northmail finds the server. Mail, calendars and contacts arrive in the background while your old mail program keeps working.

  3. Switch day

    Use the one you prefer

Both programs read the same mailbox, so there is no moment you cannot go back. If your mailbox moves to Binadit Workspace later, Northmail can move the folders for you.

Binadit Workspace is quoted per company, because the number of mailboxes, the storage and a possible server of your own differ each time. Ask for a demo and you get a quote with it.

Frequently asked questions

View all frequently asked questions

Can we keep classic Outlook instead?
Yes. Classic Outlook connects to Binadit Workspace through standard protocols, and Microsoft says it will support existing installations until at least 2029. Northmail is for those who would rather not depend on that date.
Is Northmail really free?
Yes. Free for everyone, without advertisements and without an account with us.
Which accounts does Northmail work with?
Binadit Workspace, on-premises Exchange and Gmail, side by side in one window. Each account keeps its own folders, calendar and contacts.
Does the assistant send my mail anywhere?
No. The assistant is optional and runs on your own computer, with an open model that you download once. No mail, prompt or index goes to a cloud.
Is Binadit Workspace only this one product?
No. One login covers mail, calendar and contacts, Drive for your files, Receive for getting files from outsiders safely, Office for documents in the browser, Meet for video meetings and Book for appointments. Everything runs on servers in the Netherlands that Binadit operates itself.
What does Binadit Workspace cost?
Binadit Workspace is quoted per company, because the number of mailboxes, the storage and a possible server of your own differ each time. Ask for a demo and you get a quote with it.
Is Binadit ISO 27001 or NEN 7510 certified?
The data centre we host in is ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 certified. Binadit itself, as a company, does not hold these certifications. If your own certification requires a certified supplier rather than a certified data centre, tell us before you decide, so you can check that with your auditor first.
