Dropbox often entered the company through one person who needed to share a large file, and stayed. It is operated by Dropbox, Inc., a US company. Binadit Drive does the same job from the Netherlands, on our own hardware, as a Dutch company with no foreign parent: team folders, sharing links, version history and desktop sync.

Why teams are exiting Dropbox

Dropbox is rarely in the register of processing activities, and it usually holds exactly the files that should be: contracts, scans of identity documents, customer exports. Storing them there is a transfer to a US company, lawful today because of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is under appeal before the court that struck down its two predecessors. The US CLOUD Act reaches data a US provider controls wherever it is stored, so European storage does not settle it.

Is Dropbox GDPR-compliant?
Today, yes, if Dropbox is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for the service you use, which is what makes the transfer lawful. That compliance is as durable as the framework, and an appeal against it is pending before the Court of Justice of the EU, which struck down both of its predecessors.
Dropbox offers storage in Europe. Is that not enough?
It decides where the files are stored. It does not decide which law Dropbox answers to. Under the CLOUD Act a US provider must produce data under its control when a US authority orders it to, wherever that data is stored.
Half our people use personal Dropbox accounts for work. Can you deal with that?
That is the normal situation, and it is the first thing we map. Company files in personal accounts are a bigger problem than the jurisdiction: nobody can see them, and they leave with the person.
Can people outside our company still open what we share?
Yes. You share a file or a folder with a link, the same way you do now.
Can we move mail at the same time?
Yes. If your email is with Google or Microsoft, the legal question is the same one, and both can move in one project.
