European-only alternative to Google Drive.
Google Drive holds the files your company actually runs on: contracts, HR documents, customer data, quotes. It is operated by Google LLC, a US company. Binadit Drive does the same job from the Netherlands, on our own hardware, as a Dutch company with no foreign parent: shared folders, sharing links, version history and desktop sync.
- Provider
- Google Drive
- Headquarters
- Mountain View, CA
- Jurisdiction
- United States
- Legal regime
- CLOUD Act, FISA 702
"EU region" is not sovereignty. Four questions decide it.
Data residency tells you where the bits sit. Sovereignty tells you which legal system can compel access. The answer must hold on all four - or the stack is not sovereign.
- Residency
-
Where is the data physically stored?
Not "in the cloud" - which datacenter, in which country, under which jurisdiction.
- Subprocessors
-
Who else is in your data path?
Every vendor that touches the data: the CDN, the email relay, the error tracker, the analytics pipe.
- Jurisdiction
-
Whose laws can compel disclosure?
A US-headquartered provider falls under FISA 702 and the CLOUD Act - even when the bits sit in Frankfurt.
- Key custody
-
Who actually holds the encryption keys?
If the cloud provider holds both the data and the keys, the data is readable by them - regardless of any DPA.
Fails on jurisdiction and key custody.
EU bits, US-headquartered parent, US subprocessors in the default path, provider-managed keys.
Passes on all four.
EU-hosted on EU-headquartered infrastructure. Zero US subprocessors in the default path. Customer-held or EU-KMS keys. Listed by name in your Article 28 DPA.
Why teams are exiting Google Drive
Files are personal data as much as email is, and usually more of it. Storing them with Google is a transfer to a US company, lawful today because of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is under appeal before the court that struck down its two predecessors. The US CLOUD Act reaches data a US provider controls wherever it is stored, so a European region does not settle it. With files hosted by a Dutch company in the Netherlands there is no transfer, and Chapter V of the GDPR does not come into it.
Google Drive services and their EU-only equivalents
Binadit Drive is file storage and sharing. It replaces the part of Google Drive that is about files, and it is honest about the part that is not.
My Drive
- What we run instead
- Personal file space in Binadit Drive.
- Engineering note
- Files move with their folder structure.
Shared drives
- What we run instead
- Shared folders for teams and departments.
- Engineering note
- Who may see what is set up with you. A move is also the moment to clean that up.
Sharing links
- What we run instead
- Sharing links to a file or a folder, for colleagues and for people outside your company.
- Engineering note
- The link points at a server in the Netherlands, which is also what the person you share with sees.
Version history
- What we run instead
- Versioning: earlier versions of a file are kept and can be restored.
- Engineering note
- The same safety net, for ordinary files.
Google Drive for desktop
- What we run instead
- Desktop sync: your folders appear on your computer and stay in step.
- Engineering note
- People keep working from their file manager the way they do now.
Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
- What we run instead
- Ordinary office files in Binadit Drive.
- Engineering note
- A Google document only exists inside Google. When it leaves, Google exports it as docx, xlsx or pptx, which opens in the office software on your computer. From then on it is a file you own.
Gemini in Drive
- What we run instead
- Not replaced, on purpose. We do not train on your data and no model reads your files.
- Engineering note
- Your data is yours. We host it, we do not learn from it.
How we migrate off Google Drive
We move your files out of Google Drive and keep both sides running until you are ready to switch. If your mail is with Google too, it moves in the same project.
-
Before the move
We map what you have
How much there is, how it is organised, which folders are shared and with whom. You get a fixed migration price and a date.
-
Side by side
Files are copied while everybody keeps working
We copy the files to Binadit Drive with their folder structure. Google Drive stays in use, so nobody is blocked and nothing is lost if we need another pass.
-
Switch day
People start working from Binadit Drive
A final sync picks up what changed, desktop sync is switched over, and the Google side can be closed once you have checked that everything is there.
Tell us how much storage you need and how many people work with it. You get a fixed monthly price and a fixed migration price, not a calculator.
