European-only alternative to Box.
Box is file storage for companies, with a great deal of workflow built around it, from Box, Inc. in Redwood City, California. Binadit Drive is the file part, done from the Netherlands: folders on your computer, team folders, sharing links and versions, with documents that open in the browser and a safe way to receive files from outside.

"EU region" is not sovereignty. Four questions decide it.
Data residency tells you where the bits sit. Sovereignty tells you which legal system can compel access. The answer must hold on all four - or the stack is not sovereign.
- Residency
-
Where is the data physically stored?
Not "in the cloud" - which datacenter, in which country, under which jurisdiction.
- Subprocessors
-
Who else is in your data path?
Every vendor that touches the data: the CDN, the email relay, the error tracker, the analytics pipe.
- Jurisdiction
-
Whose laws can compel disclosure?
A US-headquartered provider falls under FISA 702 and the CLOUD Act - even when the bits sit in Frankfurt.
- Key custody
-
Who actually holds the encryption keys?
If the cloud provider holds both the data and the keys, the data is readable by them - regardless of any DPA.
Fails on jurisdiction and key custody.
EU bits, US-headquartered parent, US subprocessors in the default path, provider-managed keys.
Passes on all four.
EU-hosted on EU-headquartered infrastructure. Zero US subprocessors in the default path. Customer-held or EU-KMS keys. Listed by name in your Article 28 DPA.
Why teams are exiting Box
Box holds exactly the files a regulator would ask about: contracts, personnel files, customer data. Box is a service of Box, Inc., a US company, so using it is a transfer of personal data to the United States. That is lawful today on the strength of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or of standard contractual clauses, and both lean on the same question: whether US law protects the data of Europeans well enough. The Court of Justice of the EU has answered no twice, and an appeal against the current framework is pending there. Separately, the US CLOUD Act obliges a US provider to produce data under its control wherever it is stored, so a European data region does not settle it. With Binadit Workspace there is no transfer to a third country, so there is nothing to monitor.
Box, and what replaces it in Binadit Workspace
Binadit Drive is the files part of Binadit Workspace, built by Binadit itself. Your folders appear on your computer as if they were local, and the files live on a server in the Netherlands.
Folders on your computer
- What we run instead
- Binadit Drive for macOS and Windows, with files on demand so your disk does not fill up.
- Engineering note
- A file is fetched the moment you open it.
Team folders
- What we run instead
- Team folders with permissions per colleague and their own quota.
- Engineering note
- Who may see what is set up with you. A move is also the moment to clean that up.
Shared links
- What we run instead
- A link to a file or a folder that expires when you choose, 30 days at most.
- Engineering note
- For colleagues and for people outside your company.
File requests
- What we run instead
- Binadit Receive: a page on your own address where outsiders hand you files without an account, encrypted in their browser.
- Engineering note
- Included with Drive.
Version history
- What we run instead
- Every change is a version you can restore, and deleted files wait in the trash.
- Engineering note
- A mistake can be undone.
Editing documents in the browser
- What we run instead
- Binadit Office: documents, spreadsheets and presentations in the browser, edited together, on files that stay on Drive.
- Engineering note
- Word, Excel and PowerPoint files open and save in their own formats.
Search
- What we run instead
- Search that looks inside PDF, Word and Excel files.
- Engineering note
- It runs on the server, so it is just as fast from a small laptop.
Box Sign, Box AI and workflow automation
- What we run instead
- Not replaced.
- Engineering note
- Binadit Drive is file storage, sharing and editing. If you depend on signing or on automated workflows, tell us before you decide.
How we migrate off Box
We move your files out of Box and keep both sides running until you are ready to switch.
-
Before the move
We map what you have
How much there is, how it is organised, which folders are shared and with whom. You get a fixed migration price and a date.
-
Side by side
Files are copied while everybody keeps working
We copy the files to Binadit Drive with their folder structure. Box stays in use, so nobody is blocked and nothing is lost if we need another pass.
-
Switch day
People start working from Binadit Drive
A final sync picks up what changed, the Drive app is installed, and the old accounts can be closed once you have checked that everything is there.
Binadit Workspace is quoted per company, because the number of mailboxes, the storage and a possible server of your own differ each time. Ask for a demo and you get a quote with it.
