European-only alternative to Google Docs.

Google Docs made working in the same document at the same time normal. The price is that the document only exists inside the service of Google LLC, a US company. Binadit Office gives you documents, spreadsheets and presentations in the browser, edited together, on ordinary files that stay on Binadit Drive in the Netherlands.

"EU region" is not sovereignty. Four questions decide it.

Data residency tells you where the bits sit. Sovereignty tells you which legal system can compel access. The answer must hold on all four - or the stack is not sovereign.

Residency

Where is the data physically stored?

Not "in the cloud" - which datacenter, in which country, under which jurisdiction.

Subprocessors

Who else is in your data path?

Every vendor that touches the data: the CDN, the email relay, the error tracker, the analytics pipe.

Jurisdiction

Whose laws can compel disclosure?

A US-headquartered provider falls under FISA 702 and the CLOUD Act - even when the bits sit in Frankfurt.

Key custody

Who actually holds the encryption keys?

If the cloud provider holds both the data and the keys, the data is readable by them - regardless of any DPA.

Fails AWS · Azure · GCP · EU region

Fails on jurisdiction and key custody.

EU bits, US-headquartered parent, US subprocessors in the default path, provider-managed keys.

Passes Binadit managed stack

Passes on all four.

EU-hosted on EU-headquartered infrastructure. Zero US subprocessors in the default path. Customer-held or EU-KMS keys. Listed by name in your Article 28 DPA.

Why teams are exiting Google Docs

A Google document is not a file you hold but a link into a service, and everything written in it sits with a US provider. Google Docs is a service of Google LLC, a US company, so using it is a transfer of personal data to the United States. That is lawful today on the strength of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or of standard contractual clauses, and both lean on the same question: whether US law protects the data of Europeans well enough. The Court of Justice of the EU has answered no twice, and an appeal against the current framework is pending there. Separately, the US CLOUD Act obliges a US provider to produce data under its control wherever it is stored, so a European data region does not settle it. With Binadit Workspace there is no transfer to a third country, so there is nothing to monitor.

Google Docs, and what replaces it in Binadit Workspace

Binadit Office is the documents part of Binadit Workspace. It opens straight from Drive with your Workspace login, and the documents stay ordinary files.

Documents, spreadsheets and presentations

What we run instead
Binadit Office: write, calculate and present in the browser, on files that stay on Binadit Drive.
Engineering note
Built on Collabora Online, which is based on LibreOffice. It runs on our own servers in the Netherlands.

Working in the same document at the same time

What we run instead
Several people edit the same document and see each other's changes as they happen.
Engineering note
No second account: it opens from Drive.

File formats

What we run instead
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files open and save in their own formats. OpenDocument too.
Engineering note
The document is a file in your folder, not a link into a service.

Version history

What we run instead
Every save is a version on Drive.
Engineering note
A mistake can be undone.

Where the documents are kept

What we run instead
Binadit Drive: your files on a server in the Netherlands, synchronised with your computer, with team folders, sharing links and versions.
Engineering note
Part of Binadit Workspace, with the same login as your mail.

Google Forms, Apps Script and add-ons

What we run instead
Not replaced.
Engineering note
Binadit Office edits documents, spreadsheets and presentations. If you depend on forms or scripts, tell us before you decide.

Gemini in Docs

What we run instead
Not replaced, on purpose. We do not train on your data and we do not put a model inside your mailbox.
Engineering note
Every AI feature inside a US suite is another data flow you answer for under Article 24 GDPR. If you want an assistant, choose one deliberately and know where it runs.

How we migrate off Google Docs

We move your documents out of Google Docs with their folder structure and keep both sides running until you are ready to switch.

  1. Before the move

    We map what you have

How much there is, how it is organised, which folders are shared and with whom. You get a fixed migration price and a date.

  2. Side by side

Files are copied while everybody keeps working

We copy the files to Binadit Drive with their folder structure. Google Docs stays in use, so nobody is blocked and nothing is lost if we need another pass.

  3. Switch day

People start working from Binadit Drive

A final sync picks up what changed, the Drive app is installed, and the old accounts can be closed once you have checked that everything is there.

Binadit Workspace is quoted per company, because the number of mailboxes, the storage and a possible server of your own differ each time. Ask for a demo and you get a quote with it.

Frequently asked questions

View all frequently asked questions

Is Google Docs GDPR-compliant?
It can be used lawfully today. Google Docs is run by a US company, so using it is a transfer of personal data to the United States, which rests on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or on standard contractual clauses. That is as durable as those instruments: the Court of Justice of the EU struck down both earlier frameworks, and an appeal against the current one is pending there. Where the data is stored does not change which law the provider answers to.
What happens to our existing Google Docs?
They leave as an export: Google saves them as docx, xlsx or pptx. Those go into the same folder structure on Binadit Drive and open in Binadit Office in the browser. From then on they are files you own.
Is Binadit Office the same as Microsoft Office?
No. It is built on Collabora Online, which is based on LibreOffice. It opens and saves Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in their own formats, and a complex layout or a macro can behave differently. Try it with your own documents before you decide.
Is Binadit Workspace only this one product?
No. One login covers mail, calendar and contacts, Drive for your files, Receive for getting files from outsiders safely, Office for documents in the browser, Meet for video meetings and Book for appointments. Everything runs on servers in the Netherlands that Binadit operates itself.
What does Binadit Workspace cost?
Binadit Workspace is quoted per company, because the number of mailboxes, the storage and a possible server of your own differ each time. Ask for a demo and you get a quote with it.
Is Binadit ISO 27001 or NEN 7510 certified?
The data centre we host in is ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 certified. Binadit itself, as a company, does not hold these certifications. If your own certification requires a certified supplier rather than a certified data centre, tell us before you decide, so you can check that with your auditor first.
